Immune systems and weather have been dreary around here for a couple of days, but that hasn’t stopped us from enjoying the wonders of spring! It’s how far a bouquet can go for education on its last few days. We managed to squeeze a grace and courtesy lesson, botany lesson and practical Life lesson out of this beautiful bouquet. Fresh flowers are such a wonder to small children, and it’s so enchanting to watch them work with and manipulate these heavenly stems!

This is such a simple lesson to prepare for that can provide lots of time for the child to focus on beautiful work. What you will need:

1. Fresh flowers

2. Small Pitcher

3. Small Glass Jar

4. Small scissors or clippers if the child is old enough to trim stems ( not required if you pre-trim stems to desirable length for glass jar)

There really isn’t much to this exercise. The key role of the adult is to communicate the silent excitement of working with and arranging a few flowers beautifully in a small jar. Three or four flowers to arrange is plenty for a 2 year old.

Start by showing the child how to pour water slowly and gently into the glass jar. Have a few flowers out and show how to place each stem carefully and gently into the jar. Make a big deal quietly with facial expressions about getting each stem into the correct place and rearranging them slightly once they are all in. Once you are satisfied with the placement, place your hands behind your back and give the flower arrangement a big overdramatized but silent nod of approval: crazy eyes and all. Then give the child a turn.

The importance of early childhood education to children's lives is beyond question. A good beginning to life is well recognised
